It gives me great pleasure to report that 2014 was another tremendously successful year for Make-A-Wish® North Texas! Thanks to the support of thousands of donors and volunteers, our chapter was able to grant wishes for 550 children throughout our 161 county territory who suffer from life-threatening medical conditions. While these wishes ranged from I wish to swim with the dolphins to I wish to be a firefighter for a day, they all had one thing in common - each wish played a significant role in improving a deserving child’s quality of life.
What is it about a wish that brings such joy into the life of a child who has a life-threatening medical condition? Well, think about it. The child gets to focus on the future and the excitement of a wish, rather than the fear and pain of an illness. Once the child decides on their most heartfelt wish, a pair of caring volunteers works with our team of dedicated staff members in an effort to make that wish a reality. The wish child and their family feel anticipation and excitement as they watch the wish come together. As a wish granter and someone who routinely speaks to wish children and their families during a difficult time, I can honestly say that the wish experience breathes hope and encouragement not only into the child’s life, but also into the lives of loved ones who get to witness the child’s spirit being lifted.
This past year, more than 1,100 children in our chapter territory were diagnosed with a life-threatening medical condition. It is our goal to bring hope, strength and joy into the lives of these children by granting their one true wish. I am proud to say that Make-A-Wish North Texas has never turned away an eligible child referred to our program and that we continue to encourage all eligible children to request a wish from our organization.
Make-A-Wish North Texas is dependent on our donors, volunteers and Board of Directors to help us grant wishes for hundreds of children every year, and we are deeply grateful for this support. The generous donations of time and funds that we receive from our friends in the community provide us with the resources necessary to create hope, improve strength and generate joy in the lives of the children and families we serve. Once again, Make-A-Wish North Texas would like to extend our sincerest thanks to all of our supporters, and we hope that we may continue working together to share the power of a wish® in the coming year!
