Does Make-A-Wish® offer volunteer opportunities?
Volunteers are the foundation of our organization. Our chapter has more than 1000 volunteers and only a small professional staff. In addition, a volunteer Board of Directors governs the Foundation. We offer a wide variety of volunteer opportunities including wish granting, fundraising, special events, outreach efforts, publicity, and helping in the office.
What are the benefits of volunteering with Make-A-Wish?
Whatever volunteer position you assume at the Foundation, you will know that your work helps to bring hope, strength, and joy to a child at a very difficult time in his or her life. You will meet and work with our dedicated staff and volunteers in a supportive and challenging atmosphere.
What is the time commitment expected of volunteers?
Volunteer commitments vary, depending on the volunteer position you decide to pursue. We make every effort to match your availability and level of commitment with the needs of your volunteer assignment. As a Wish Granter, you are given the important task helping to make a child’s wish come true. It is very important work; and we expect a high level of commitment and professionalism from all of our volunteers. In return, Make-A-Wish makes a commitment to you: We promise to provide quality training and the support and resources needed to do the work entrusted to you.
Are volunteers directly involved with the children and families?
Wish Granting volunteers have the highest level of involvement with children and their families. They make the initial contact with the family, interview the wish child to determine the child’s one true wish, and coordinate details with the Make-A-Wish staff members. As a new volunteer, you will receive training to ensure that you are knowledgeable and comfortable in meeting and talking with children and their families.
Are there volunteer positions that would not be so emotionally demanding?
There are many volunteer opportunities that do not involve direct contact with our wish kids and their families. Some of these volunteer opportunities include fundraising and special event help, outreach efforts, publicity and helping out in the office. Please see Ways to Volunteer for more specific information. If you have a skill or talent that you would like to offer, please contact our Services Team to see how you can become involved.
Why do I have to undergo a criminal background check?
Make-A-Wish volunteers are trusted to work directly with our wish families and may handle Make-A-Wish resources (including money or donated goods) as they arrange wishes or volunteer at fundraising events. For the protection of the wish families and Make-A-Wish itself, we require criminal background checks of staff and most volunteer positions. All information in the application and any acquired through the background check will remain confidential and is used only for screening and placement purposes.
How do I apply?
We’re so glad you asked! To begin the process of becoming a Make-A-Wish volunteer you will need to fill out our volunteer application and submit your information for a background check.
