Going for a hike, competing in sports or even just riding a bike are typical activities that six-year-old boys do almost every day. However, for six-year-old, Wade, who is currently battling Osteogenesis Imperfecta, more commonly known as brittle bone disease, these everyday activities could cause serious harm.
Because of his condition, Wade has developed an interest in video games, where he lives vicariously through the on-screen characters and their out-of-this-world adventures. To Wade, this is a way that he can play with his family and friends without getting hurt.
When Make-A-Wish® volunteers met this imaginative little boy to learn more about his one true wish, Wade shared his love for video games and informed the volunteers that his one true wish was to be in a video game so “he” could truly play!
Make-A-Wish® North Texas collaborated with Robot Entertainment, a Plano, Texas based video game publishing company, to make Wade’s wish become a reality.
In the summer of 2013, Wade and his family were invited to visit the Robot Entertainment headquarters where he became a game developer for a day learning about the process of developing characters for videogames, receiving a behind the scenes studio tour and even having lunch with fellow developers.
The biggest surprise came when Robot Entertainment unveiled a model of him in-game as his dream videogame character – Wade the Supermaster. Excited as could be, Wade helped them put the finishing touches on his Supermaster character, selecting colors and weapons sounds and even helping to develop a back story.
“This was the best day ever!” Wade mentioned after leaving the Robot Entertainment offices. “I just can't wait for the game to be finished!”
In October 2013, Robot Entertainment released Echo Prime™, an epic sci-fi action RPG for iOS devices. With real-time combat designed and tuned specifically for touch-based devices, Echo Prime takes players on a journey across the stars, through a wide array of exciting locations to battle fearsome enemies and huge bosses. To celebrate the release, Robot invited Wade and his family to once again visit their offices to celebrate Wade the Supermaster’s official debut. There, they surprised Wade with his very own iPad, already loaded with Echo Prime, and showed him how to unlock his special “Wade the Supermaster” skin in the game.
“It was such a great day!!!!” said Emily, Wade’s mom. “Thank you Robot Entertainment and Make-A-Wish for all your generosity. You really made a little boy's dream come true.”
Echo Prime is available to purchase on the App Store for $4.99 and will soon be coming to Android devices.
