Wishes in Flight

Make-A-Wish® recipient Charlie, was diagnosed with Leukemia before his third birthday. Over the years of chemotherapy treatment, his family tried as much as they could to take him away from the hospitals and spend time outdoors as a respite from his medical life.

Throughout his battle, Charlie dreamed of the outdoors. He began studying Alaska and the fishing, hiking and adventures he wished he could experience.

Charlie’s day dreaming soon turned into a wish-come-true when he went to Alaska. The wish turned out to be everything he had dreamed of and more. “Charlie loved seeing a black bear in the wild,” said Felicia, his mom. His other favorite trip highlights were fishing, Alaskan food and flying in the sea plane.

According to Felicia, the wish has served as a wonderful end point to a five-year battle with cancer. “It gave Charlie a positive experience related to his cancer that he will remember for a lifetime,” she said.

Of course, visiting the Last Frontier gave Charlie’s family an appreciation for Alaskan life. “Our trip... provided a lifetime of memories in a way that only a special place like Alaska could,” she said. “We will never forget meeting so many wonderful people that made Charlie and our family feel special.”

Their journey with Make-A-Wish will not end with Charlie’s Alaska wish. In fact, it’s only just begun. “Seeing what Make-A-Wish can do for family will certainly inspire us to find ways to support future wishes,” said Felicia.
